楽天

We have a pro baseball team called ロッテ "Lotte" in Japan. I have heard from a Chinese friend of mine that it is named 乐天(樂天) "Le4 Tian1" in Mandarin Chinese.　We feel similarity, to some extent, in pronunciation between the two.

One new pro baseball team was lauched last year and they decided to call themselves 楽天 "Rakuten" in Japanese. They did not know that their rival team "Lotte" is translated into the same name as theirs in China; 乐天(樂天).　It is okay for Japanese but we wonder how Chinese people would try to translate "Rakuten" 楽天 into Chinese.

質量

The character 質 is pronounced "zhi4" in China and "zhi2" in Taiwan.

"Quality" is 品質 "pin3 zhi2" in Taiwan but it is 质量 "zhi4 liang4" in China. 质量 means "mass" in Taiwan and Japan. "The law of conservation of mass" is translated 质量守恒定律 (質量守恆定律) both in China and Taiwan. We, Japanese, call it 質量不変の法則.

期

The mainland Chinese says Monday (星期一) as "xing1 qi1 yi1", whilst Taiwanese pronouces it "xing1 qi2 yi1". Difference lies at tone of 期.

The mainlanders apply the 1st tone and the islanders take the 2nd tone.

China: 　延期 [yan2 qi1]，过期 [guo4 qi1]
Taiwan: 延期 [yan2 qi2]，過期 [guo4 qi2]
